Consequently, the Climate Change Club raised $72.75 for its worm composter. That's over 290 books donated and recycled. Thank you, thank you, and thank you!

ALBERNI ELEMENTARY CARES FOR OTHERS!
In the first week following the Haiti disaster, Ms. Petrone sponsored a raffle to raise money for Haiti.

The winners of the draw were:
#1 Brennan Cross for Mme. N'Diaye's class Champagne glasses
#2 Tao Austin from Mme. Elizabeth's class Crystal necklace
#3 Ryan Boehm from Mrs. Kevis' class leather baby shoes
#4 Laurette Bordal (E.A.) leather card holder
#5 Linneah Meanney from Mrs. Comeau's class pink flower necklace.
Thanks to your generosity, we raised $524. 39 for UNICEF Canada. That amount will be doubled by CIDA.
That is enough to provide 32 emergency first aid kits, which will provide crucial medicine and equipment for communities devastated by disaster, or 1 water pump and 22 water sanitation kits to help provide access to clean, safe water. Mrs. Petrone will let UNICEF decide where the need is greatest.
Ms. Petrone thanks students and families for all of their support, Jason Petrone for making and donating the raffle items and congratulates our lucky winners!
Congratulations are also in order for Bella Hall (aka Laura Ingills Wilder) in our Kindergarten class who with the help of her friends, raised money to help earthquake victims in Haiti. Bella, you are amazing.

Guiding Kids Through Life’s Storms
Rainbows for Children, is a grief and loss group, supported by Port Alberni Family Guidance Association. It fosters emotional healing among children grieving a loss from a life-altering crisis. These losses, include separation, divorce, death, and foster care.
Rainbows provides a safe and supportive environment for participants to process their feelings, build self esteem and learn positive coping tools to last a lifetime -- because 'it doesn't need to hurt forever'. This is accomplished through our unique 10 week peer support programs for children ages 4 to 12.
For more information or to register your child, call Family Guidance at 250-724-0125
FAMILY BOOK CLUB
Do
you enjoy reading? Do your children enjoy reading? Are you looking for
something to do together as a family? We are looking for families to form a
Family Book Club. We would start by meeting and deciding on which book we would
like to read and how much to read each week. Once a week we will get together
in the school library and talk about what we have read. Who are your favourite
characters? What do you think they look like? Can you draw where they live?
At the end of the book we will have a celebration and pick another book to
read.
We need at least 6 families to make this work. If you are interested in participating in our Family Book Club, please call Cathy Cross at 250-723-5603 and leave your name, phone number and evening of the week that your family can participate. Funding to purchase the books has been provided by the Alberni Valley Community Foundation.

Some parents have noticed their boys falling behind the girls in marks and interest in school. Are boys, on average, falling behind girls in academic achievement? Are boys’ and girls’ brains hard-wired differently? In this session, we will examine some of the issues around boys’ academic achievement, link some of the differences to brain research, and explore male and female role models. Parents will have an opportunity to share stories and strategies that will help raise confident boys and girls.
